The .pdf writer is not the correct tool for complex docs w/ lots of
graphics.
In fact, you should really only use it for basic docs with greyscale
graphics.

Instead, print to .ps and use distiller to generate the .pdf. (You may want
to have the Tektronix Phaser 550J 1200 dpi printer driver installed on the
system, as Adobe recommends). Using Distiller to generate the .pdf
gives you control over the dpi (etc.), which, as previously noted, is by
default downsampled to 72dpi -- no good for printing.

Let me know if this doesn't solve the problem.
