Printers: non-printing areas

Subject: Printers: non-printing areas

Producing templates for reports, space is tight
and we need to put reference info close to the
edge of the paper.

How big a margin should I allow for the non-printing
area of different printers (models unknown)?
5mm all round is ok for my HP LJ4MV but my
colleague's DeskJet 870 needs over 10mm.

General rules anyone? Also welcome are details
for particular printers, particularly common models.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Steve
