Developing Standards for Online Communication:
The St. Louis chapter of STC is sponsoring a 2-day workshop on
Developing Standards for Online Communication
taught by Dr. JoAnn Hackos. This seminar introduces you to a process
for designing effective online information standards. You will learn how
to identify user needs, understand user goals, analyze user tasks, and
put it all together into a coherent online information plan. You will
also learn how to work through the process of developing a set of
standards for your organization, and look at the results gained by
organizations that have done it right.
You will examine the usability of an existing online help system by
attempting to perform an unfamiliar task. Exercises will reveal the
importance of understanding the needs of your users and planning the
structure of the information. This workshop takes you through the online
design process, and follows it with a review of standards for online
design. It provides many examples of the effective use of screen layout,
typography, graphics, information layering, multimedia, and more.
