'Rude' seems a little strong, especially if the term prompts the user of it to
send what amounts to a mail-bomb.
It could be argued that this auto-response mechanism (which I too find
inconvenient) is actually polite, since e-mail has been known to disappear and
at least an auto-response reassures people that the mail has been received.
Unlike the relentless flow of pornography and downright fraud which clutters
my mailbox, this particular inconvenience seems essentially well-intentioned.
