Yes. Save the text you want to another file. Open up the master
document where you want to place the chapter. Click File from the
Insert menu, choose the file you want, then click the Link to File
check box.

You can work in each of the chapter as needed then update the links by
pressing F9. You can also maintain them by clicking Links from the
Edit menu.

If you turn the field codes on you can see the full path and file name
of the sub document you're linking to.

This won't mess up your TOC.

I have a hundred page document in Word 7.0 that is actually several =
other documents imported into one. Is there any way I can save sub =
documents for the chapters so the document would not be so cumbersome? =
And would doing this mess up my table of contents? I have used styles.
