Kilpatrick's column recently discussed the 's vs. the ' only
question. He agreed with the info in the post based on *Chicago*--his
logic was that he followed the sounded, so
class's opinion and
class's silence would be correct based on him, too--the possessive
"s" is pronounced.
The *fundamental* rule, IMHO, is not to create something the
reader will trip over (which is why I tend to use "data is").
(Depending on audience,let me hasten to add!!)
