Techsmith puts out a nifty little shareware product called SnagIt
(recommended by someone on the list, thankyouverymuch) that allows you to
capture all or part of your screen image. The end result is just as nice,
if not nicer, than what you get when using Paint Shop Pro.

A few weeks back I had the same problem as you describe, and solved it by
using SnagIt to capture specific "regions" of my Word document (namely the
images) and save them as gifs. This was the only thing I found (though I'm
sure there must be others) that would capture the images nicely. Copy
and paste distorted the images terribly, as did both resizing and
resampling. Unfortunately I don't know enough about graphics (especially
monochrome) to be as effective with them as I'd like. If your images look
good in the word document though, then it might not hurt to try this.
