Here is what works for me:
1. Create a style called Numbered List or Bulleted List (or use Words
own style from the normal.dot template)
2. Create a style called Numbered or Bulleted Indent where numbering
is turned off and all indents are kept the same.
To do that make a new style (Format Menu > Style > New) based on
the Numbered or Bulleted List style)
3. Then you can interchangingly apply the Indent style and the
List style. Luckily, Word continues the numbers for the
numbered list (which at other times can be annoying).
