Hello Framers,

I wanted to give you a head's up on a problem
that has come to light from initial customer
feedback on FrameMaker 5.5. This is a crash
that was introduced between our final customer
beta and the final production version for 5.5
[isn't that always the way???].

We have internally (last week) began referring to
the crash as a "sidehead" crash since the samples
from customers all had sideheads, but the issue
turned out to be more global. It is a core
crash which means it affects all platforms
all products.

The scenario involves complex (multi-column)
documents containing straddle objects such as
anchored frames or tables. Actions that cause
the document to reformat such as deleting/adding
text, changing fonts, etc. could cause the crash.

As of late on Friday, we know what causes the
crash and how to fix it. Once we get the fix
thoroughly tested, a free fix will be available
to customers. I will post information about
the udpate once we work out those details. Yes,
we know this is a serious one and we hope to
expedite the fix while still ensuring the fix
itself doesn't introduce other problems!

Before I sign off, I would encourage anyone who
hasn't already done so to visit our online
solutions database. We have been pushing on the
support staff to get 5.5 issues documented for
availability to the public. The URL for the
database search is:

I have attached one note in particular that gives
an overview of Program Corrections to 5.5. You can
go to the above URL to find other 5.5-specific notes.
