Your description fits the draft mode setting; if I'm right, you've
stumbled over a feature, not a bug. Access your Tools> Options dialog
box and then click the View tab. Does the Draft Mode box have an X in
it? If so, simply clear this box and then click OK. You'll go back to
the familiar screen.

I like to use draft mode because it is a lot faster than maintaining a
WYSIWYG screen constantly. It uses a Microsoft font no matter how many
font changes you use, but when you exit out of draft mode, all your
formatting is there.
