Boy, that's just the opposite of what I've found. I took a 50% cut in pay
initially to become a writer, but did it because I grew to hate programming,
and I love to write.
Over the course of time, I've brought that income level up quite a bit (with a
lot of hard work), but I've never gotten close to what I would be making if I
were still developing software?and my negotiating skills are pretty good. I
don't care though. I'm happy doing what I do, and glad I make the money I do.
It's still a lot more than I could make in less technical jobs. But it's the
enjoyment that counts most for me. I can come to work, don't need to have wine
every night when I come home, and I no longer yell at my cats. What more can
you ask?

I was on one project where it came out I was making 20-30% more than the
programmers. Boy, did they not let me forget that.
I just thought they were lousy negotiators.
(The irony is I expected to take a pay cut when I left programming - I've
consistently made more, and had more freedom, as a writer.)
