Virginia--

Don't sweat it--things will get back to normal in a few days.
Periodically this list (like all lists) gets sidetracked by a single
issue, people argue bitterly for a few days, Eric tells everyone to shut
up <g>, a few people absolutely have to have the last word, and a week
later everyone's forgotten about it.

And, actually, the list has continued to carry on many different and
useful threads at the same time as the certification crusade.

When I first joined this list, I got very stressed about these
sidechannels, not to mention the emotional level of the rhetoric. Based
on my long experience (1 whole year) I've survived a number of them and
learned that the list is not in fact being pulled into a new
(disastrous) course but just that one section is sort of meandering
before rejoining the main channel. Generally I check in on a message
now and then and delete the rest--and give thanks to people who take the
time to post summaries on important issues.

I am sometimes also surprised when people don't seem to consider the
"mechanics" of a list like this. Kind of like people who don't
understand why, when they're the tenth car in line, it takes 30 seconds
to move forward when the light turns green. It's called lag time, and
while it can't explain all the prolificness (sp?) or the apparent
disdain for Eric, it certainly magnifies the situaton--we need to
account for it and realize that while some things about this list are
irritating, it certainly doesn't nullify the list's value.
