Web browsers break lines for word wrapping only at spaces and
hyphens.  If your HTML document includes long words you can
insert soft hyphens to signal the browser that it is OK to break
those words at the indicated point if necessary.  The browser
only displays a hyphen if it breaks the word; otherwise it's a
non-displayed character.

BTW, most word processors have a similar function.  In MS Word,
"optional hyphens" show up as a dash with a little downward hook
at one end if you are displaying non-printing characters.
