Miscosoft's dictum *never* to use datum may work in the SW/HW world, but it
cannot be used as gospel in the technical world. Datum is still used in a few
specialized ways, such as *a datum line* in surveying and/or geology.
I have learned over the years to be highly suspicious of dogma.
