Posts like Steve's make me think that it is futile to try and run a
listserv without moderating it.
I had this discussion in Toronto with a number of people related to
our STC SIG listserv, because it amazes me that relatively intelligent,
educated people manage to behave the way they do on listservs.
Is it that constant turnover means that there will be perpetual newbies
who never saw the post that says WE DO NOT CRITICIZE JOB POSTINGS on this
listserv?
Or is that there will be perpetual people who manage to trash their intro
message when they sign up and ignore FAQs when they appear? You know, the
ones that go into pretty good detail about what is appropriate for this list?
Or that, as I said in a similar discussion on our listserv, that list
participants are so enamoured with the prospect of writing pithy comments
that they just figure that "I don't need no stinkin' guidelines."
Yeah...I know. Pot. Kettle. Black.
