As a former software development engineer (not a programmer!) it's useful
to me to understand a little about programming. The most useful thing I
know about, however, is the software development process, and I would
recommend reading up in that area, too. I think it helps me to understand
how the engineers schedule their tasks, and how I can fit into that
schedule. It also helps to understand how the revision control and
baseline processes work.

Sort of off the top of my head, some of the well-known authors in the
field of software processes are DeMarco and Yourdon.
