Firstly, there are some major differences between PDF Writer and
Distilling. If all you have are plain text documents (either simple
graphics or no graphics) , you can use the PDF Writer. However, for more
complex documents, Adobe recommends Distilling. The resultant file size
will be less and your graphics will look much better.
Also, you can set up Acrobat for semi-automatic distilling. If you're using
a postscript printer (and using the latest postscript driver), print to a
postscript file (FILENAME.PS) in a *watched* directory. Of couse, set up
Adobe Acrobat Distiller to watch this directory beforehand. Distiller will
create two sub-folders (directories) under a designated folder called "IN"
and "OUT". When you print to a file, send the .PS file to the "IN" folder
and Distiller will see it and process the PDF file to the "OUT" folder on
the fly, automatically, dynamically, and so on, and so on.
