TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
From years 'n' years ago, I recall a lit professor mentioning that Hemingway
did all his writing standing up, at a dresser or bureau. Then somewhere I
heard of an allusion to some psychological inquiry into how people thought
standing up vs. lying down..supposedly, you think more quickly and tactically
on foot, but more creatively and associatively lying down.
Anyway, when I've got to self-edit or self-proof, I insist on an empty room
(I have no shame, I've used the janitor's locker a few times) and worked on
foot. And I often read aloud, just as Abraham Lincoln was said to do when he
was trying to better get the sense of a sentence.
They're weird techniques, but what works, works, and I'm way past caring who
thinks what of ME....as long as they respect my WORK.
Hope this helps.
