Gosh, it's been over 10 years since I've used a typewriter, so let me
see if memory serves me correctly...
You manually turned the platen (?) to move the paper up or down,
depending on if you wanted a superscript or subscript. If I remember
correctly, each "click" of the platen was half-a-line. Have you ever
used the knob to manually feed paper through a dot-matrix printer. Same
idea.
