When I was promoted from editor to department manager at a previous company,
I was forced to employ this scenario during a down period in company
fortunes. I regarded the editing function as too important to neglect,
especially since my department was much larger than four writers. Most
editors do some writing during slack periods anyway, so you can assign
projects without immediate deadlines to them. And I used to do a few of
those assignments myself.
