I've thought a lot about this and to paraphrase one of the questions
that started all this, where do you see yourself in 20 years? Some of
you will be happily retired, sipping daquiris in Key West and I salute
you.

I'll be 53 and just entering the stage of my career when I'll be
expensive and people will start wondering about whether I'm going to
bail on them before to long for retirement. My former attitude was "I
just want to write."  Essentially, I want to be a technician.

But you can shake technicians from a tree. By the time I'm 53, I might
be the best damn technical writer on three continents. But if you can
replace me with two new college graduates for about the same money and
no one bitches too loudly about the fact that excellent documentation is
now just good enough, what's the better business decision?

So I am (reluctantly) going to have to get some management under my
belt. I'm also starting to think that at some point I'm going to have to
get out on my own. If I'm pulling doen good money, are you just going to
want to pay me when its crunch time or all the time?

Thoughts to ponder...
