I hear you re: the high cost of STC. Aside from the membership of $100/year, the
meetings here cost on average $16/month (they're always dinner meetings). Coming up with
$300 a year doesn't sound like much on paper--but it _is_ a lot when there are a lot of
other monthly and continuing expenses competing with STC. I'm just starting out so my
salary is low when compared to other TWs in Wisconsin (micro-sized compared to you
fabled Californians). Perhaps one day when my company (which is very small and very new)
gets rich and famous, there'll be enough in the coffers for it to pay for my membership.
Until then, I go without some amenities to swim in the STC pool.

I'm definitely getting ROI however. STC didn't have anything to do with getting my job
(I went to my first meeting the very day I started at my job) but I do get quite a lot of
professional contribution. The meeting topics are virtually always helpful in one aspect
or another (even the holiday meeting helped me and my wife out) and have some bearing on
what I'm doing at work. I learn something every time I go. I've decided to contribute to
my chapter by being its webmaster and helping with the Region 6 conference (to be held
this October in Milwaukee, btw) and I've contributed a tiny amount to the newsletter.

My chapter's next meeting topic is, I believe, all about the benefits of STC. What has
the chapter done for me lately? The answer is: a lot and it will continue to do so. It's
tough coming up with the money and getting to the meetings but I (actually my wife _and_
I) make the sacrifice because my world would be darker without it.

By the way, how many people usually come to your STC meetings?
