If you want to do technical writing for software, don't even think about it
unless you are willing to become a computer guru yourself. Otherwise, you
will be paddling upstream with no oars (or arms or legs or torso, for that
matter).

If you want to work with programmers (necessary when writing software
manuals), you must become an expert in the programmer psychology. You must
be willing to act like a programmer, think like a programmer, dress like a
programmer, eat like a programmer, and smell like a programmer. Sometimes
you may even have to pick the bugs off their furry backs. Otherwise they
won't talk to you.

If the programmers think that you want to be like them, they will be nice to
you, and share some of their infinite wisdom with you. And then you can get
your job done.

This is my opinion.
