TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I agree with most of the commentary about the challenge of working as a
writer within a larger non-writing group.
However, all the discourse leaves me with a question.
If the engineers are not customer-oriented, and do not care what happens
to the product when it leaves their department, what is their motivation
for designing and working on the hardware or software?
Would the communication be better if we had an understanding of their
raison d'etre, their modus operandi, or attitude towards what they hope
to accomplish?
