As concerns portfolios you might find this interesting:

I teach my students that there are three levels of
portfolios (ever notice that teachers need to begin things
with lists).

First is the morgue that contains all important drafts of
everything they have written. I have four file drawers
full.

Second, is the polished or "best work" portfolio, which is
bound in page protectors in 3-ring binders--I have a couple
of binders full of my best work. Nobody touches this but
me.

Finally, there is the satellite portfolio. I make one of
these to take to an interview (job or client). This is
comb-bound, and is specific to that client's need--audience
analysis again. This piece is as polished as a
book--capable of passing the 60 second test. I take it to
the client, planning to leave it there--in fact, it usually
says " A Portfolio of published work by David E. Hailey,
Jr., Ph.D., for such and such corporation." When one
considers that while the client is trying to remember the
work the others have shown, he or she is looking at my best
stuff, the twenty or so dollars the satellite portfolio
costs is a sound investment.
