TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
As Paul indicated in his response to Kim's original post about Certification,
it certainly serves to bring out strong and vocal opinions on both sides (if
there are indeed only two sides). So to refuel this issue, I wish to pose the
following questions:
1. For those in favor of certification, what would you support certifying?
Writing skills? Tools-related skills? Or technical comprehension in a
specific arena (such as medical technical writing)?
2. What would serve as the governing body for such a program?
3. For those against certification, why?
