I have also heard/ seen the explanation that o = open (broken circuit) and
I = closed (connected circut)

It also can be easily detected by vision-impaired persons when
embossed or raised.

Most of the electronic gear I have has this symbology, and
I have also seen this on a fair number of power tools such as
table saws, drill presses, etc.
