"Everyone's Guide to Successful Publications" by Elizabeth Adler is a
very large and complete guide to the entire publication process,
including very straightforward and helpful design info.
Any of Roger Parker's excellent books, including his most recent (I
think) "Desktop Publishing & Design for Dummies" -- which includes
more than a few things for those of us who have been doing this
awhile.
