The reason modern word processors don't like double spaces is pretty
intuitive if you are using full justification and you see this great gaping
hole in between your sentences that end with huge words and have to wrap
down a line. Like leaving the home row to fling the carriage back over,
double spaces are another vestige of the old Underwood and Royal days when
you came home from work with ink all over your fingers if you had to change
the ribbon. Change is good.
Double spaces are fine if you are using left justified text, but still not
necessary.
I told my boss once that I only use a single space because I can save 5,000
keystrokes a year. He got a nice chuckle out of it.
