I have discovered a book which addresses many of the topics that have appeared
as threads on this list. The book is

The GUI Style Guide by Susan L. Fowler and Victor R. Stanwick, 1995, AP
Professional. ISBN: 0-12-263590-6 (pbk).

The book provides guidelines supported by research and extensive references to
other resources.
Some topics covered are parts of a GUI (nomenclature), wording of Help topics,
suggested length for Help topics, guidance on using hypertext links, screen
layout, controlled English, proper use of color and using graphs and charts.
Also, IMHO the book itself is a model of excellent presentation of technical
information.
