I think the rules are quite complex;
For general purpose stuff, as long as you want it. The best web page I have
ever read was pure text, in a huge big chunk - admittedly not everyone would
agree with me (on the specific text) but if the subject matters interests
you (the reader), length rarely matters.
But for -technical- communication, I'd say try to keep it as short as
possible. Usually the audience is not reading for pleasure, but because they
need some specific bit of info - give it to them and get out of their way
would be my philosophy.
Unless its overview, where you might need to learn about several
concept-chunks to make any sense of all of them. But usually that's best
reserved for a printed manual, IMHO.
Marketing communication -- well, I don't know, because I don't think the web
is as useful for Marketing Communication as its made out to be (in the form
that Marketing usually takes on in it, at any rate).
