David Blyth suggested that <paraphrase> if a significant
number of folks aren't following the [html 2] standard,
than perhaps it's not the standard. I'd dispute the logic
behind that assertion: lots of folks break the laws of the
land, but that doesn't mean the laws are no longer
enforced. HTML _is_ a standard, and if you write to the
standard, you'll meet the needs of more users than if you
ignore the standard.
Nonetheless, I agree with David that HTML 2 is limiting;
moreover, HTML 3 is so late in coming that it's
embarassing, and this tardiness is why there are so many
self-appointed standards bodies (Microsoft springs to
mind...). This doesn't make the concept of a standard
meaningless. It would be far more productive if Microsoft
and Netscape agreed on a common standard and then competed
solely on how well they implement the standard, but in the
real world...
