Brad DeMond asked whether "bioavailability" was just a
synonym for efficacy. The short answer is no; the long
answer is that the bioavailability of a compound determines
whether it will be efficacious.

I've read that many fat-soluble vitamins, for example, have
low bioavailability because most people eat them on an
empty stomach; because there is no fat present to soak them
up, they never get absorbed and pass right through you.
Oral rehydration therapy works on the same principle:
combining water with salt and glucose helps the water
become bioavailable.
