Subject: Tech writing to MarCom???

I've been asked to do some marketing communications as a "little side
project" - - I'm employed full-time as a technical writer for a
software developer. I'm thrilled and feel up to the task. In fact,
I've been exploring the possibilities of going full-steam ahead with
the marketing communications and making technical (user guide
authoring, at least) secondary. I like technical writing and would
like to somehow combine the best of both worlds.

So my questions for the list folks:

1. Are any of you involved in writing marketing communications?

2. How viable is the market for marcom writers who specialize in high
tech marketing writing?

3. Any words of wisdom about transitioning from my present mode of
tech writing to high tech marcom writing?

4. Is the Marketing Communications PIC (national level) still around?
My e-mail queries have gone unanswered. I sent e-mail to an address
listed in a brochure I got from the national office.

5. I've read Janice King's book, "Writing High-Tech Copy that Sells" and
think it is wonderful. Any other suggestions for books on the subject?

A few notes: We (Lone Star Chapter of STC in Dallas) do have a
marketing communications PIC. I understand that the interest has
waned lately and a few people are trying to revive it. We have a
meeting scheduled to do that this next week. I'm hopeful about that.

Thanks for any suggestions.
