In case you-all missed it, there was an entire article
[or maybe it was a columnist's take on it] on the
email vs. e-mail [or E-mail] usage in the NYTimes
Monday Business/Information Industries section,
a few months back. Examples/precedents of each
form were cited, along with opinions from the low,
high and mighty as to which is or oughta be preferred.
I think the Times came down in favor of "E-mail"
[maybe e-mail], 'cuz it's like e-pub(lication), e-text,
e-zine, and so on... What do you e-think 'bout that?
Reminiscent of online/offline vs. on-line/off-line:
my employer's parent co. actually issued us a
Tech Pubs Style Guide with official preferences,
e.g., e-mail ["Do not use email!"], offline, online, etc.
I notice that all forms abound in the trade pubs/press,
so there's no prevailing consensus, fer as I can see.
