As a technical writer I am very aware that if I offend my audience then
they are likely to switch off and not read my procedures carefully.
Because of this we never use either she or he in a procedure. We use
either the imperative, you or they etc. I don't believe this looks
strange. If we are using examples we tend to alternate male and female
names and thus pronouns.

We find this is a good way not to offend anyone and still get the message
across
