I disagree...my career started as an unpaid intern at Wang Laboratories. The
experience I got there got me my first job...

I'm not saying, however, that interns shouldn't be paid...but I think that
experience should be weighed against monetary gain. And if the intern has no
skills to offer a potential sponsor, they may end up working there free in
exchange for experience. If a student turns down an internship at a high
tech company that could potentially offer him or her valuable experience
based solely on the fact that the internship is unpaid, then I think that
would be a big mistake.

Our program requires an internship for graduation. We actively
seek PAID internships for our students. So far, every
internship provider has agreed to pay our students. I can't
see the logic in mandatory unpaid internships. I've done my
share of unpaid writing in order to get some experience. I
wouldn't, however, think it was so valuable that I would require
my students to take an unpaid internship.
