So, my question is: Do you agree that he violated the copyright and
is it worth my time to convince him to not do it again? If so, how
should I do it? Mail copies of the copyright laws and related
articles?

Keep in mind these are the learned opinions of a person holding the lofty status
of not-even-close-to-a-lawyer. In order:

1) Yes.

2) Probably not, because he wouldn't listen.

3) It's a waste of time.

4) If you insist on doing it, the quickest way would be to mail your copy of the
newsletter to the copyright holder. Their lawyers will be more convincing than
you ever could be. And, in the event they don't mind, their inaction will grant
him permission to do it, thereby making him legal, in spite of himself.

Have fun,
