For what it's worth IBM's 'Dictionary of Computing' (Eighth Edition
[March 1987]) defines a server as follows:

"On a local area network, a data station that provides facilities to
other data stations, for example, a file server, a print server, a mail
server."

I've always thought of servers as software not hardware. Like when I
send a job to a printer a piece of code grabs my job and tells the
printer all the pertinent details it needs to know to print my job. I
guess I'll have to rearrange my thinking!
