PJ Rose wrote about calling ourselves "engineers" when we are not licensed
engineers.

I quite agree that we must be very careful about using the designation
"engineer". Like PJ, I have an engineering degree, but cannot call myself an
engineer because I am not a licensed Professional Engineer. Most companies I
worked for called me a Technical Specialist, or Engineering Specialist, when
I was performing an engineering function (always under the supervision of a
professional engineer).

In Alberta, the Association for Professional Engineers, Geologists, and
Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA) is lobbying for legislation that will make
it illegal for anyone other than a professional licensed engineer (or
engineer-in-training) to perform any kind of engineering function at any
level, even under the supervision of a professional engineer. I doubt such
legislation will pass; too many scientists, technicians, and engineers from
education systems outside Canada would be immediately unemployed!

But we need to be careful.
