Our Technical Communications group is faced with a quandary. Our company is
going to a Windows NT network environment. According to our information
technology people, we can only use TrueType fonts in this environment.
Our company's Graphics Department, which we use to get our finished
publications printed, has an Imagesetter and a Xerox Docutech. According to
them, the Imagesetter will only accept Adobe Type I fonts. But if we use Adobe
fonts, we are told that we can't print drafts to our networked printers.
Additionally, the Docutech that we lease is missing the piece that will take a
computer file directly to print. (I think the Graphics people are using the
Docutech as some sort of high-end copier.)

We are a bit uneducated about network, font, printer compatibility issues; are
we being given the run around or are these real problems? If they are real,
does anyone out there have suggestions for how to handle them? Our group
writes mostly internal publications, so we think the Docutech with the piece
that takes our computer files directly to print could meet most of our needs.
Should we be concerned about being limited to TrueType fonts only??? Again,
any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated. -- Charissa McSwain
