Like Margaret Knox,
as a tech writer, I love *knowing what's going on.*
I've primarily documented software systems for companies
both large and small. I was once asked, "What is the best thing
about being a technical writer?"
I said:
I derive tremendous satisfaction from the effective
communication of ideas.
I get great satisfaction from providing a service that
is both necessary and highly valued.
And it's great, when the books, or manuals, or guides
come out, to be able to pick them up, and say, "Hey,
I wrote that."
plus, as Margaret mentioned, you do get the occasional good review.
On one recent project, I had an engineer read what
I'd written, and she said:
"I'm so glad you're the writer. You understood what I could not say."
