Regarding job searching, I commented that I found my current job through the
Sunday Help Wanted ads, and said that it's not the way we're "supposed" to
find jobs any longer. Howard Gold asked "What's wrong with using the Sunday
funnies?"

Well, Scott Adams -does- give his e-mail address in every "Dilbert..."

Seriously, what I meant was that, according to all the employment search
specialists I spoke to in '93 and '94, the Help Wanted is supposed to be the
-least- effective way to find a job. At that time, the most effective way
was supposed to be networking, and tapping the so-called "hidden" job
market. Well, I tried those methods as well, although frankly I didn't get a
very high response rate on jobs leads discovered via networking.

When I got my current job via "Help Wanted" ads, the folks at GE's
outplacement center were a bit surprised.

Or is all of this "hidden job market" stuff a load of hot air? What are the
thoughts on this?
