Oh, Doug, it was a grave error indeed when I hit the REPLY key, instead of
mailing directly to the individual requesting responses, as I had intended.

It is with great shame and regret that I admit this egregious mistake. (I
looked up "egregious"--it was one of those words that sounds good, but just
when you are about to use it, you realize you don't _really_ know what it
means. My Oxford rewarded me with "extremely bad".)

You wrote:

"Once you're convinced that all your wealth is a result
solely of your own effort, determination and ability (with a slight nod to
the mysterious workings of the Free Market) and that any requirement to
fund common social projects constitutes an attempt by your
social/intellectual/genetic inferiors to get fat at your expense, there's
no real point to the discussion. "

--This reminds me of a cartoon I saw recently, goes somethin' like this:

One guy says to the other guy: "The Outstanding Businessman of the Year Awards
Committee has finally gone fully free enterprise (or market, not sure)."

The other guy asks: "How so?"

The reply: "They're selling first prize to the highest bidder."

Americans--God luv'em!

Happy New Year, (do you think I should post an apology to the list?)

Gwen
