Aahz notes:
"I'm less interested in answers than in questions I should answer, and
approaches
y'all have found successful"

My approach, especially for installation, has always been to try it on one
(or more if I can get my hands on 'em) machines. If you can, try to do it
on machines with different configurations, to see if that makes any
difference.

One major question I almost never see answered is, "What if something
doesn't work -- how can I work around it? How can I recover from it? How
do I know it didn't work?"

Just some thoughts -- hope they help
