Betsy Perry wrote about "first day free" for contract writers.

I've used that, with some success. Let me add a devious twist to it. I was
with a very small contract house about six months ago, I was one of their few
writers who had Frame experience. All of my Frame experience, though, was on
a Mac. They sent me to interview for an assignment, using Frame 4.0 on Windows.
The agency was presenting me as an "expert," and frankly was exaggerating my
experience a little bit. I did an interview in the morning with the manager,
she offered me the position. I then said "I'll start tomorrow. How about if
I spend the rest of the day here, for free, just so that I can become familiar
with your documents and file organization?" She liked that idea, and left me
alone while I spent the rest of the day learning differences between Windows
and Mac versions. By the next morning, I was up to speed. I did well in the
assignment, and was seriously considered for a permanent position.
