I once tutored a Vietnamese 10 year old who had learned English in
Australia. The text we were working on was a study section on the Spanish
"conquerors" and their migrations to the United States. This is a kid whose
parents barely spoke English and whose beautiful Australian accent masked
the fact that she didn't understand what she was reading.
If you have 30 of these children in a class, you can see where some of the
problems develop.
