Being a Canadian, I've found that most of these differences depend on
whether you grew up using Oxford or Webster's dictionaries. Remember
that Daniel Webster created his dictionary in order to simplify the
language for inhabitants of the New World. Thus
colour -> color
sympathise -> sympathize
useable -> usable
and many other examples.
