What's with all of these "looking for a job" notices? Is there some kind of
graduation period coming up? Or is it a phase of the moon?

Let's make an FAQ here: How to Find a Job in Tech Writing. You'all e-mail
me your best tips: sources, books, recruiters (ugh!), (the ones to avoid
and the ones to trust), newspaper job sections, etc. I'll put the whole
mess together and whenever someone asks for a job, we'll blast them, no,
we'll help them

For starters, here's my tips:

1) Join the Society for Technical Communications (STC). Job hotlines,
meetings, personal networking. Tel: 703-522-4114.

2) Join the National Writers Union (NWU). Job hotlines, meetings, personal
networking. They are very strong in the Bay Area. Tel: 212-254-0279 or
72400 -dot- 1712 -at- compuserve -dot- com

3) Lots of jobs in the classified section of the San Jose Mercury News
newspaper. It's the newspaper of the Silicon Valley. Check your graduate
library for this paper. They are also on-line. Call 408-297-8495 for more
information. They are also part of America On Line (AOL).

4) Internet Job Searching: Check the Bitnet Newsgroups ba.jobs (ba=Bay
Area) and ba.jobs.contracts. Use "search" to look for writ..., edit...,
document..., etc.

5) Subscribe to High Technology Careers Magazine. Published in Silicon
Valley. It's 44 large format pages of just jobs in high tech. Many writing
jobs too. $29/one year, mail to High Technology Careers Magazine, 4701
Patrick Henry Dr., #1901, Santa Clara, CA 95054. Or send fax, with credit
card info, to 408-980-5103.

Let's hear it from you'all. Don't be shy! What about good classified
newspapers for other regions? Boston, NYC, Chicago, etc?

yrs,
andreas
