The ability to understand who you are writing for and communicate concepts
to this audience. This requires a good command of language but not
necessarily proper English. Of course, the appropriate scientific background
depends on the subject matter. In general, it helps to know a little
human pyschology.

In my opinion, companies that advertise for tech writers are too specific
in their requirements. Most good tech writers are quick learners. This
applies to both their tools and their subject matter.

Space hardware, high-speed, high-volume data processing, scientific
visualization, graphics, animation.

> What type of background do most of your writers have?

Both English and scientific.
